Segreti diversi: Critical Edition and Linguistic Analysis of an Early Fifteenth-Century Recipe Book

Description

This doctoral project aims to produce a critical edition of the recipe collection preserved in manuscript Palatino 916 of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence. Dating to the first half of the fifteenth century, this manuscript provides an invaluable source for the study of textual tradition and technical vocabulary in practical treatises. Its contents, numbering more than 700 recipes, are arranged in a heterogeneous manner across 158 folios. Following an extensive alchemical and metallurgical section, the collection broadens into a wide range of topics (such as the falsification of precious stones; the preparation of colors, inks, and adhesives for manuscript illumination and dyeing; veterinary practices; medicine; gastronomy and cosmetics, among others). The edition will be accompanied by a linguistic analysis of the various scribes’ hands, seeking to compare individual recipes with cognate versions found in other practical texts and to trace the underlying sources —variously adapted — that inform the compilation. In parallel, the project aims to exploit the visualization capabilities afforded by XML/TEI encoding and specialized lemmatization tools, thus bringing into sharper focus the remarkable lexical richness of the text. The markup will center on key technical elements, including terms related to colors, metals, implements, and procedures, enabling the creation of an interactive glossary. This glossary will facilitate direct linking to online lexicographic resources (e.g., the OVI corpus, TLIO).
