Description
The aim of the project is to create a digital annotated critical edition of the rhymes of Bartolomeo da Castel della Pieve. He was an Umbrian grammarian poet who lived during the 14th century. The main objective is to offer for the first time, a textual reconstruction of the poems, which are attested by 69 manuscripts and 3 printed editions, through a Lachmannian approach. The poetic production is made up of twenty-seven texts some of which are uncertain, or correspondence. Most of the rhymes have love as their central theme, yet there is no shortage of moral issue among them, such as Benché il cielo à nel tuo prato concluso, dedicated to Pope Urban V, and Poiché il corso del ciel vuol che tu viva, addressed to Viscount Giovanni d’Oleggio, who was appointed governor of Bologna in 1354.
Moreover, the project will include a reconstruction of the historical and cultural context in which the poet operated, through an analysis of 14th and 15th century anthologies that have not yet been fully studied. Exploring the inclusions and omissions of Bartolomeo and other poets within the manuscripts will provide a better understanding of how contemporary poetry was received and circulated.
The project will leverage advanced digital tools to ensure the creation of an interactive critical edition. The digital framework will enable precise management of the critical apparatus and efficient comparison of textual variants, fully leveraging the opportunities provided by modern technologies for philological and literary research.
