The project aims to produce a digital scholarly edition of El Giardeno by Marino Jonata and its apparatus of glosses, both transmitted by a single known manuscript: codex XIII.C.13, preserved at the Biblioteca >Nazionale di Napoli “Vittorio Emanuele III.”

The manuscript, likely autograph, contains a theological and moral poem in the vernacular, composed by a Molisan poet in the fifteenth century. It narrates the journey of a viator and his two guides through Hell and Paradise, representing both a valuable linguistic testimony and a rare document of the fifteenth-century reception of the Commedia in southern Italy. The text is accompanied by marginal drawings and a rich Latin exegetical apparatus, providing the author’s sources, historical and biographical references, and detailed explicatio verborum and signorum of the most obscure passages. The project envisions a TEI-compliant, XML-encoded digital edition capable of reflecting the complex stratigraphy of the manuscript. Through multilayered markup, lemmatization, and syntactic and grammatical annotation, the edition will make linguistic, metrical, and intertextual data fully accessible. Its interface will allow users to visualize, individually or simultaneously, the manuscript, the critical text, and the editio princeps, facilitating cross-comparison among sources. The interactive structure will enable the consultation of glosses, commentary, and hypotexts, as well as the isolation of fragments written in different Italian vernaculars embedded between text and gloss. By integrating philological rigor with digital technologies, the edition seeks to recover and enhance a linguistic heritage which, composed of discontinuous and fragmentary texts, has often been condemned to dispersion because it remains difficult to systematize.
