The PhD program provides specialized training in textual philology and the application of computational tools for text processing, incorporating a high degree of methodological and interdisciplinary innovation. This approach opens up a wide range of career opportunities in a world where digital textuality increasingly demands new professional expertise.

The PhD program’s academic activities consist of courses and seminars, following the tradition of the Scuola Normale. Additionally, it includes research periods both at affiliated institutions and within the network of collaborations established through formal agreements, enabling research opportunities in Italy and abroad.

After the first year, during which candidates are required to attend at least three courses in Pisa (amounting to 120 hours of in-person lectures) and pass the corresponding exams, a broad and flexible range of educational opportunities becomes available. This includes the possibility of continuing their studies with research stays at affiliated institutions. Depending on their research needs, candidates are encouraged to undertake extended study and research periods at other Italian and international institutions, particularly at the École Nationale des Chartes in Paris and King’s College London, with which specific agreements are in place.
