The research project aims at studying the abridged version of the Histoire ancienne jusqu’à César, one of the earliest historiographical compilations in Old French prose. So far, critical studies and published editions of the text have focused on the more complete version of the work, while what was actually the most widely read and known version has been neglected. The project therefore proposes to study this latter version from a purely ecdotical point of view, with the aim of identifying the stemmatic relationships which reciprocally link the witnesses. The work will particularly seek to investigate the oldest levels of the tradition. The collation of the manuscripts will be conducted through the research and analysis of selected loci critici throughout the entire extent of the text. The project will also seek to analyze the methods of abridgment itself. The digital part of the project will consist of the creation of a sample edition of the work that will show the results of further reductions to which it was subjected in individual witnesses.
