Manuscript Franzoniano 55. Digital edition and linguistic study

Description

This doctoral project aims to produce a digital critical edition of the texts transmitted by manuscript Urbani 55 of the Franzoniana Library in Genoa: Tratao de li sette peccai mortai and Libro de la misera umana condizione, reworked versions of Somme le Roi by Laurent d’Orleans and Miseria dell’uomo by Bono Giamboni. Copied in a monastic environment during the 14th century, this manuscript is one of the most important documents of the vernacular from that period. The project seeks to reconstruct the history of the codex and provide a reliable edition, which will replace the current version in the Corpus OVI. The edition work will be accompanied by a detailed linguistic study that situates the formal profile of the text within the vernacular production of the Ligurian region and, more broadly, Northern Italy of the time. This investigation will also focus on the linguistic stratification due to its unique dual nature as a translation, continuously comparing the translational choices of the section derived from the French text with those of the section dependent on the Tuscan text.
