Description
The research project will consist of a textual analysis of part of the manuscript tradition of the Lancelot en prose according to the method of loci critici. The identification of the loci was carried out according to both content and structure, focusing on the points at which the narrative suggests a cyclical perspective foreshadowing the Queste and the Mort Artu. In particular, these points introduce the theme of Lancelot’s inadequacy to complete the Grail quest and anticipate his being surpassed by his son Galaad. Based on Micha’s edition, nineteen such loci have been identified in the Lancelot en prose: omens, premonitory dreams, instances of Lancelot failing to complete certain feats, and narrative and/or genealogical inconsistencies. These loci become more frequent as one nears the end of the Lancelot en prose. Twelve of the nineteen appear in the Agravain. The analysis will begin with these twelve; depending on the progress of the work, one or more of the earlier seven may be added. From the collation and recensio, we expect results that may, on the one hand, help organize the genealogical relationships among the witnesses and, on the other, shed light on the value of varia lectio for interpreting the earliest stages of the cycle’s circulation.
