The project aims to produce a new critical and annotated edition of the lyrics of Perrin d’Angicourt, a trouvère from northern France who lived in the thirteenth century. Perrin is of particular interest because of his ties to Charles I of Anjou and to the Puy d’Arras, as evidenced by the substantial poetic corpus transmitted under his name; his figure thus exemplifies those northern trouvères who, during the thirteenth century, acted as mediators between courtly and bourgeois culture. The project will therefore carry out a biographical investigation (supported by textual, linguistic, and thematic-structural analysis) aimed at assessing the trouvère’s relations with members of the Puy d’Arras and with the historical figures mentioned in his compositions, in order to situate him within a milieu of contact between troubadours and trouvères that likely fostered mutual influences. The textual corpus, as transmitted in the chansonniers, presents numerous conflicting attributions and consists almost exclusively of chansons courtoises, with a few jeux-partis. The only critical edition of Perrin d’Angicourt’s works was prepared by Georg Steffens in 1905, but it was soon considered frequently erroneous and compromised by serious misunderstandings. The project therefore aims to undertake a new recensio of the witnesses, followed by the constitutio textus both verbal and musical of each composition, with a critical discussion of the cases of uncertain attribution.
